WORKED EXAMPLE

Build seven from five and two

Keep three squares in every row. The first five rows hold 15 squares. The last two hold 6. All seven rows hold 21.

7 × 3 = (5 × 3) + (2 × 3) = 21
Seven rows of three squares, split into five rows and two rows.5 rows of 3 = 152 rows of 3 = 6

UNTIMED PRACTICE

Try three ways to use sevens

Try each step before looking at its worked answer. If one is difficult, print just that follow-up. No sign-in is needed.

01

Build seven groups

Seven rows hold 8 buttons each. Split the rows into five and two.

Worked answer

5 × 8 = 40 and 2 × 8 = 16. Together, 40 + 16 = 56 buttons.

02

Find the missing factor

There are 63 counters in groups of 7. How many groups are there? Remove one whole group. How many groups remain?

Worked answer

7 × 9 = 63, so 63 ÷ 7 = 9 groups. One group less gives 56 ÷ 7 = 8 groups.

Choose the next practice

If the two partial products are correct but their total is off, practise combining the two groups. If a learner can find a product but cannot reverse it, work on missing factors. If the facts are right but the story answer is off, ask which groups are still there.
