Question 1 of 4
Write one addend per row and find the total.
TEACHING GOAL · 2.OA.C.4
Try aloud Three rows hold four tiles each. What sum follows the rows? How could you count the same tiles by columns?
Across the rows, 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Down the columns, 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Both describe the same rectangle. Ask what one addend counts.
Count equal rows and write one addend for each row.
Four arrays · up to 5 rows and 5 columns · 1 student page + 1 keyWrite a row sum and a column sum for the same rectangle.
Four nonsquare arrays · totals up to 20 · 1 student page + 1 keyTEACHING GOAL · 2.OA.C.3
Try aloud Pair 9 counters. Add one more counter. Which total can split into two equal groups?
Nine makes four pairs with one left. Ten makes five pairs with none left. One counter from each pair goes into each half, so 5 + 5 = 10.
Make pairs, identify a leftover and write two equal addends for even totals.
